Published at the conclusion of a year-long residency at South London Gallery (SLG), Practice Composition collects material relating to the exhibition One Dozen and Zero Units, held at SLG in March 2016. The publication includes an essay on the residency by David R J Stent, as well as documentation of Objects of Conjecture, a collaborative exhibition by Hughes and Stent from 2015.

Sarah Hughes is a British artist, composer and performer, producing work that explores the boundaries of interdisciplinary practice, often moving between sculpture, installation, composition and music. Hughes is the co-founder of Compost and Height, and is also co-editor of the new music journal, Wolf Notes, and co-founder of BORE, a publication dedicated to experimental text-based and graphic scores.

She was composer-in-residence at South London Gallery for 2015/16, part of Sound and Music‘s Embedded programme – a professional development programme funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
